Both Atheists and Christians are Minorities (now hear me out)

How can this be? Especially considering that (depending on where you live in the nation) there might be a church on every corner. Additionally, a recent survey from the Barna group shows that at least 65% of Americans identify as Christians…but there is more to this story.

The same survey from the Barna group also demonstrates that of the 65% of Americans who identify as Christian, less than 6% hold a Biblical worldview. These results were achieved by asking someone if they identified as a Christian and then presenting them with approximately 50 more questions to build a more detailed perspective on their worldview. I would expect this subgroup of self-identifying Christians to be those who take the Bible seriously from cover to cover and allow it to form their outlook on life totally. To me, this is the consistent Christian. The true believer.

In my personal experience, most non-believers would stack up similarly. When I've engaged in discussions while doing some form of public evangelism and someone either says outright that they are an atheist or they suggest it through some other form - the chances that they are a diehard, hardline "naturalist" is not very likely. Most professed atheists that you'll bump into on the street are much more comfortable in agnosticism. Similarly to that of the consistent Christian, the hardline atheist is also a minority subset.

But the real issue is greater than lukewarm Christians or agnostic-leaning atheists. The real issue in life is that most people just don't care. Most people don't care to think about those big, important questions. I believe that the majority of Americans (perhaps people on a broader scale) would prefer not to be bothered by questions of "Is God real?" or "Did Jesus truly rise from the dead?" or even "How plausible is it that life came from non-life?"

There is no question that it's easier and more comfortable for most people to avoid these types of questions, and yet these are some of the most fundamental questions in regard to our existence. Not everyone needs to be a profound philosopher or astute theologian, but we should wrestle with these issues at some point, and at the very least, we shouldn't be hostile towards them.

Lastly, it goes without saying that as a Christian, I'd much prefer everyone to repent and trust in Jesus. However, at the very least, I don't want anyone going to their graves having avoided the big questions altogether. So start now. Find evidence supporting Christianity, naturalism, and the universe's origins. You don't have to figure it out all in one day, but today is certainly an excellent day to start.
